Vegan start-up VeganNation recently announced that it has secured a 10-year lease to preserve 15,000 acres of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. The initiative comes as record-breaking fires continue to burn in the Amazon region, likely caused by farmers attempting to clear the land for cattle ranching.

VeganNation—which is aiming to create the world’s first online vegan ecosystem—will open the land to preservation groups and activists in an effort to protect it from deforestation and wildlife poaching. Additionally, VeganNation partnered with four soccer teams from cities strategically located near the entrance to the Amazon Rainforest (Remo, Paysandu, National, and Iranduba) to promote environmental awareness.

“The Amazon rainforest might be located in Brazil, but its destruction affects us all, as climate change is a direct result of human activity and it’s in our hands to fight it,” Isaac Thomas, VeganNation CEO and co-founder, said.

Last month, VeganNation launched its online vegan community—complete with its own traceable digital currency and marketplace—internationally after successfully closing a $10-million funding round. The company launched in 2018 with a mission of uniting vegans worldwide through its platform.
